How to create a Vision Board

July 2, 2020

As we hit the 6 month mark of 2020, I’m sure we can all agree on what a year it’s been. I want to share my experience and insights on creating a vision board. I feel now is a good time to re-evalute things I hope this can spark some light into taking ownership of the second part of the year. Below I break down what you’ll need, how to create the board, and some tips on making it a successful one. If you have a vision board that you created for the year you can always adjust things mid way, nothing wrong with that.

I made my first vision board for the first time last year (2019 vision board) and I can’t say it didn’t work for me. Which is why I was so excited to create another one for 2020. Even though 2020 took a sharp turn, my vision board is still in fruition.

A vision board puts your thoughts, feelings, and wants into fruition. It’s like ‘pen to paper.’ This may sound overwhelming to narrow it all down to what you want, but I’m here to help.

What you’ll need

  • Magazines
  • Poster paper (however big you want to create your vision board) I use an 18 x 24 inch paper
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Printer (optional): If I can’t find what I’m are looking for in magazines, I will go to Pinterest and print out words or images I’m specifically looking for to add to my board.

How to break it down

I like to categorize my goals for the year, and then I’ll look for images/words that have to do with those goals. The trick is you want to be specific (I’ll get into the importance of that later).

Here are some examples of categories in no specific order: Career, personal growth, travel, fitness and health, financial, personal goals, and relationships with family, friends, and loved ones.

You would then collect a series of images, words, phrases that represent your goals. I’m going to list some examples below so it can help you understand how to put the vision board together.

Examples

Financial – you could use an image of a piggy bank. Now to get specific, what you do is grab your pen and write on the poster board the exact amount of money you want saved this year, or to earn. Place the piggy bank image over it.

Career – Do you want to get certified in something, change jobs, get promoted? Whatever it may be grab images that represent a work setting, an image of the certificate, the title of promotion you want. Again you can always write under the image the specific goal.

Let’s wrap this up

I think you get the idea on how to do this. I’m someone who collects an abundance of images for each category. I will place all the corresponding images together on the vision board so they look categorized.

It’s a lot of fun to cut and browse through a mix of magazine types. You will have images and words that will pop out at you that you weren’t even looking for, and that’s the best part. It’s just an example of how you are manifesting you goals in your mind as you’re doing this it will help piece it all together.

Tips

  • Being specific with your goals is key. You want to have tangible goals that you envision yourself achieving. You want to make X amount this year, you want to travel to X, you want to move into X neighborhood, and work at X company.
  • Have your board in a visible spot so that you can see it each day. This helps remind you what you are striving for and question what actions are you taking today in order to getting closer to accomplishing your goals. Remember ‘Out of sight, out of mind.’
  • Print images online if you don’t find them in magazines, or write them in.
  • Doing this in a group setting is fun and can be encouraging, even if it’s through a zoom call.

If you have any questions on getting this done, I’d be happy to help make those dreams come true!
