Caring for your Mental Health During Isolation

April 21, 2020

Hi Friends, I recently shared my list of things to do while spending more time at home. Not everyone is in a productive mood, so I also wanted to share my list of how to care for your mental health during isolation. Isolation can be triggering for some and make everyday things feel extra heavy. I hope my list of items can help you or a loved one.

Things to do to help your Mental Health during this time

  • Meditate – you can find some guided meditations online or through apps such as; Calm and Headspace.
  • Breath Work – this is something I’m learning about during this time, and started practicing it. Here is a link I found that explains a little more on breath work and it’s benefits.
  • Journal – this can help with freeing your mind of stress while expressing your feelings during this uncertain time. You can journal anything you’d like, it’s YOUR journal.
  • Zoom call – the latest communication trend not only being used for remote work meetings, but with loved ones. Share a coffee date or happy hour with a friend, or get the whole family gang in there.
  • Pick up a crafty project that will keep your hands and mind busy. Some recommendations I’ve seen are puzzles, coloring books, creating DIY projects, cooking, and tie-dyeing.
  • Try an online class – you can pick from a variety of workouts online, and even jump into a live yoga class. Youtube is a great tool for this. You can also check in with your local gym, a lot of them are offering online support.
  • Express gratitude – think of 3 things you are grateful for when you wake up. I’ve shared a blog post on expressing gratitude that you can find here.
  • Rest – slow down and enjoy the quiet. We are always wishing for more time, and now we have it.
  • Read about anything you’d like. It will help keep your mind off things that are causing you stress.
  • Tidy up the space around you. Clear space = clear mind. Who doesn’t feel good when they have a clutter free space around them.

I know this is not an easy time for anyone no matter the details of their situation. Just know it is temporary and your feelings are always valid. Thinking of everyone going through this time, and just a gentle reminder that you do not need to be feeling a ‘certain’ way. There is no correct way to feel. All we can do is make the most of it and count on our support system for that extra comfort.
